Optimizing Schrödinger Functionals Using Sobolev Gradients: Applications to Quantum Mechanics and Nonlinear Optics

In this paper we study the application of the Sobolev gradients technique to the problem of minimizing several Schrödinger functionals related to timely and difficult nonlinear problems in Quantum Mechanics and Nonlinear Optics. We show that these gradients act as preconditioners over traditional choices of descent directions in minimization methods and show a computationally inexpensive way to...

Particle methods enable fast and simple approximation of Sobolev gradients in image segmentation

Bio-image analysis is challenging due to inhomogeneous intensity distributions and high levels of noise in the images. Bayesian inference provides a principled way for regularizing the problem using prior knowledge. A fundamental choice is how one measures “distances” between shapes in an image. It has been shown that the straightforward geometric L distance is degenerate and leads to pathologi...

Sobolev gradients: a nonlinear equivalent operator theory in preconditioned numerical methods for elliptic PDEs

Solution methods for nonlinear boundary value problems form one of the most important topics in applied mathematics and, similarly to linear equations, preconditioned iterative methods are the most efficient tools to solve such problems. For linear equations, the theory of equivalent operators in Hilbert space has proved an efficient organized framework for the study of preconditioners [6, 9], ...

Differential Inclusions and Young Measures Involving Prescribed Jacobians

This work presents a general principle in the spirit of convex integration, leading to a method for the characterization of Young measures generated by gradients that satisfy a wide range of constraints on the Jacobian determinant. Two special cases are particularly important in the theories of elasticity and fluid dynamics: (a) the generating gradients have positive Jacobians that are uniforml...

Nonlinear least squares and Sobolev gradients

Least squares methods are effective for solving systems of partial differential equations. In the case of nonlinear systems the equations are usually linearized by a Newton iteration or successive substitution method, and then treated as a linear least squares problem. We show that it is often advantageous to form a sum of squared residuals first, and then compute a zero of the gradient with a ...
